NACS / J3400 vs CCS1
The practical difference between NACS / J3400 and CCS1 across AC and DC charging.
The short version
NACS / J3400 and CCS1 are different connector systems, but both can be used for AC and DC charging. Connector shape alone does not tell you whether a vehicle, charger, adapter, and charging protocol are compatible.

The vehicle inlet and charger coupler must also match the electrical protocol and the network’s access rules.
Where adapters fit
A manufacturer-approved NACS DC adapter can connect a CCS1 vehicle to a supported NACS fast charger. A CCS1/J1772-port vehicle may require a compatible NACS-to-J1772 AC adapter when using NACS Level 2 equipment. A native NACS vehicle is not included in that AC-adapter statement. Never infer AC/DC interchangeability from connector shape.
What to check
Confirm the charger is open to your vehicle, the adapter is approved for your exact model year, and the session can be activated in the required app or network.
Common mistakes
- Treating a DC fast-charging adapter as an AC Level 2 adapter.
- Assuming every NACS station accepts every CCS1 vehicle.
- Treating a charger’s advertised output as the vehicle’s charging limit.
